Some more James Brown for you

As today has been decreed Soulshine's James Brown day, we bring you something a little different. Tom Waits in 1987 covering James Brown's 1965 hit Papa's Got A Brand New Bag.

Taken during the 1987 tour for the release of his album of that year, Franks Wild Years, a soundtrack to a bizarre short-lived musical of the same name, conceived by Waits and wife Kathleen Brennan and starring Waits. The tour of the album was more successful, as Waits continued to hone in on increasingly theatrical performances. The first three dates of the two month tour were at Toronto's Massey Hall, and a month later a string of performances were captured for the live film/album Big Time.

Saxophonist Ralph Carney here brings the funk, at refreshing odds the rest of Waits band create the Tom Waits junkyard/industrial/jazz carnage his live shows in the 80s were known for.
