![The Happiness Project is Charles Spearin's (Do Make Say Think) 2009 JUNO award winning album of the same name. It stands as one of the most interesting experiments of last decade, using the cadence of human speech as a tool in the formation of each track's melody. Charles Spearin interviewed members of his neighbourhood with a central theme of their definitions of happiness, recorded them, and then invited a host of musical accomplices to create music from their words.
What resulted was an album winning the JUNO award for Best Contemporary Jazz Record, with tracks involving anything from Spearin's daughter complaining about the lack of butter on her toast to his elderly neighbour's pleasure at being able to say good morning to him each day. It's an incredibly unique album that is just as scientific as it is musical, and is a strange, pleasurable experience.

![The word first broke from the Broken Social Scene camp a few years ago that some sort of zany film project was in the works when the message went out for Toronto locals to submit videos of their summers. All that was known was that some kinda film was being made surrounding an open-air BSS gig in their home-town, and that it was being directed by indie director Bruce McDonald (Pontypool, Hard Core Logo.) Now, completely out of the blue for anyone completely out of the loop, it's been getting warm reviews after its debut at SXSW, the trailer of which, you can check out below.

Hailing from Florida's Palm Beach, indie outfit Surfer Blood have been steadily growing attention since their debut single 'Swim' in 2009. With 'Swim' taking a nod from stadium rock anthems of the past and mangling it with low-fi indie sounds akin to Pavement and the Pixies, they create a sound that's reminiscent of, but unique to, many acts prior. Other tracks from 2010 album 'Astro Coast' touch more on the low-fi side of things, picking from a variety of styles within the broad indie music genre. With moments not too dissimilar from that raging 00's indie movement and others toying with sounds introduced in the 90's by the aforementioned pioneers in the Pixies and Pavement, Surfer Blood are a varied and interesting outfit. Formed in 2004 by Baltimore duo Victoria Grand and Alex Scally, Beach House are an addition to the plethora of indie soundscape acts trending under the wings of acts like Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer and The Temper Trap. Creating their sound from a combination of guitars, keys, an organ and choir-esque vocals, Beach House play dense atmospheres of echo coated pop...as you can no doubt judge for yourself from the couple of videos posted within.
