In a time where the word ‘supergroup’ is becoming increasingly more common, a new all-Australian quartet has joined said ranks. Featuring Keving Mitchell (Jebediah, Bob Evans), Josh Pyke, Kav Tamperley (Eskimo Joe) and Steve Parkin, this new project joins four of Australia’s favourite alternative musicians under the moniker of ‘The Basement Birds.’
When four friends who just happen to be some of the most talented and successful songwriters in Australia decide to get together to collaborate you know something special is about to happen. When those four friends just happen to be Kav Temeperley (Eskimo Joe), Kevin Mitchell (Bob Evans, Jebediah), Steve Parkin and Josh Pyke that something special, turns out to be something magical.
Basement Birds is the new musical project from a quartet who have each played a major role in Australian music over the past decade. In an Australian first, their music will be unveiled in four 3 track bundles fortnightly on iTunes from late June 2010. As well as this, there will be acoustic versions of each track released every alternate fortnight and exclusive content available for fans via the new website www.basementbirds.com.au
With just two albums to his name the ARIA nominated Josh Pyke has achieved an impressive amount of recognition for his intelligent lyrically driven pop masterpieces, including multiple Aria award nominations along with a #3 debut spot on the Aria album charts and a #1 on the Aria Australian Chart for his second long player Chimney’s Afire.
Jebediah front man and solo artist in his own right Kevin Mitchell (aka Bob Evans) has also figured heavily on the nation’s airwaves since the late 1990’s winning multiple WAMI awards and Aria nominations for his infectious and melodic song writing style.
Enigmatic and eccentric solo artist, Steve Parkin cut his quirky pop teeth in the sleepy yet musically rich city of Perth in Western Australia. As lead singer in cult power pop band, Autopilot, Parkin played on the Big Day Out and Rock-It Festivals and has also co written some of Eskimo Joe’s latest album.
Kav Temperley is the chief songwriter and bass player for one of the country’s most well known rock acts Eskimo Joe. From the 2001 album Girl, to 2004’s A Song Is A City and on to the four-times-platinum mega hit Black Fingernails, Red Wine, and their most recent album Inshalla, Eskimo Joe have proven they are one of the most heralded and enduring rock bands around today.
As Basement Birds these four individuals come together through a love vocal harmonies and lilting alt country to deliver a collection of songs that will further endear them unto the Australian musical conscience.
