Matt Ellis
New Album ‘Tell the People’ Out Now!
Australian Launch Dates Announced
Originally hailing from Sydney and now based out of Venice Beach, California; lauded Alt. Country singer/songwriter Matt Ellis is returning to Australian shores this July to officially launch his third album Tell The People. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with an all star cast of musicians including Nels Cline (Wilco, Banyan), Greg Leisz (KD Lang, Beck, Joni Mitchell), Tim Luntzel (Bright Eyes, Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris) to name a few.
The upcoming Australian tour will see Ellis, who has graced stages everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to New York’s CBGB’s, play two exclusive shows, one each in Sydney and Brisbane (please find all dates and details below). Tell The People is in stores now through Krow Pie Records / MGM.
The Background:
Since releasing his debut album Peel in late 2000, Matt Ellis has been on a global trajectory. Peel sat in the top 10 on www.ninemsn.com.au for six weeks, whilst his website was trafficked by an average of 10,000 hits per week. The self-produced music video for the title track Peel went to air on Foxtel’s Music Country, MTV, Rage and Network Ten’s Ground Zero. The track was also added to rotation in South East Asia, but was soon banned after outraged viewers called in to complain that the clip, featuring Matt driving around Sydney blindfolded, incited reckless driving. The banning prompted an invitation from Channel [V] Asia for Matt to be interviewed and perform live at the station. Some months later, the second clip ‘The Cause’ received similar exposure both locally and overseas, and reviewers raved:
“An intriguing debut from a striking talent” – Michael Smith, Drum Media.
“The songs? Structured but raw and diverse. The playing? Fucking fantastic” – Simon Tracy, Revolver
Further reviews from Juice and Rolling Stone confirmed Peel as an independent Australian release of the highest quality. Ellis’ standard for racking-up airplay nationwide rolled on with 2003’s double A-Side single In This Life/Where It Starts. Released to a packed house at Sydney's Gaelic Club , the double A side also resulted in a live performance on Triple J.
The scene was set, in 2004 Ellis’ self-titled album received a similar response right across the world. The album quickly took off down the same path as his previous two releases, with airplay across Triple M, Triple J, FBi, and swarm of community stations here and around the world. A hectic touring schedule ensued that saw him again crossing Australia, Canada and the USA, including a spot on the Cockatoo Island Festival on Sydney Harbour at Easter, and showcases at Canada’s NxNE Festival and Harrisburg’s MMC9 in June. Matt stayed on the road through July and August playing a 32 date acoustic tour through New York, Pennsylvania, Toronto, Vancouver, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It quickly became apparent that with such serious interest overseas, particularly in the USA, it was time to relocate. Now based out of Venice Beach, California, Ellis has answered fans and critics alike with the sonically breathtaking Tell The People.
The Album:
Produced by Matt Ellis and his drummer Branden Harper, Tell The People was recorded and mixed in 11 days by Ronan Chris Murphy at Veneto West Studios. Unquestionably Matt Ellis’ finest yet, the album attracted a eminent line-up of artists, the credits of whom speak entirely for themselves: Nels Cline (Wilco, Banyan), Tim Young (David Sylvian, The Youngs), Greg Leisz (KD Lang, Beck, Joni Mitchell), Tim Luntzel (Bright Eyes, Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris) and Dave Palmer (Fiona Apple, AIR).
Released in America at LA’s Hotel Cafe late last year, Tell The People has already been featured across radio worldwide. Blogs and podcasts around the globe have been heralding the new works, whilst media has been lauding his song writing skills from Belgium to Brisbane to Los Angeles.
“Ellis oozes a sort of sexy melancholy” – Rave Magazine
“Ellis’ raspy-yet-smooth vocal profile make his recordings perfect…” – LA’s Music Connection
The Shows:
A strong touring ethos and live reputation has seen Matt Ellis perform at some of the finest venues around the world, including CBGBs, The Bitter End and The Livingroom in NYC, The Gig and The Knitting Factory in LA and many more. Since his relocation to the American West Coast Matt Ellis has become a regular performer at fame establishments The Hotel Cafe, The Temple Bar and The Mint, playing to packed houses and amassing a legion of followers.
Performances at this year’s SxSW festival in Austin, Texas have only added to the swarm of acclaim surrounding Tell The People, and with Ellis staring as featured artist on MySpace Australia during May, tour anticipation has hit fever-pitch.
Matt Ellis will be launching Tell The People in Australia at the following exclusive dates:

San Lazaro
Nine-piece Latin Mestizo outfit San Lazaro is the act that starts the party with their horn and percussion heavy salsa funk diaspora. Easily the tightest Latin outfit to come from Australia so far, their members herald from Chilean, spanish, Indian, Mauritian, Persian, Irish, Greek and Australian backgrounds and bring a refreshing tough, hip-hop, rock and reggae infused edge to the traditional Latin sound.
Featuring some of Melbourne’s finest musical talent, including celebrated young female percussionist and timbale player Nasrine Rahmani (Tumbarumba, The Oxo Cubans), outstanding Spanish language rapper and Conga player Sebastian Orellana and seasoned Chilean Vocalist, Franshesco Viran, San Lazaro are becoming a favorite of outdoor festivals Australia wide and with good reason.
Coupled with the congas and timbales, the driving “montunto”, played on the Columbian Tiple Oscar Poncell) is what characterizes their sound as distinctly Latin whilst the electric guitar (Steven Silk), bass (Bob Knob) and drumset (Lazare Agneskis), provide an urban grounding for sax and trumpet players Lachlan McLean and Elisha Maiyah to connect the dots with Latin and Dub Reggae influenced horn harmonies.

The Club covers the transition of Australian Sport into Australian business. The culture and rituals of an old club are torn to shreds as the almighty dollar takes over. As one footy player remarks "all I've got for joining is a guernsey and a pat on the back. I've given the club ten years of my life and all I've got to show for it is eighty dollars in the bank."
The club is languishing near the bottom of the Victorian Football League premiership ladder and has done so for a long time. Its been 19 years since its last premiership win and an atmosphere of blame, backstabbing and jelousy has brewed in the resulting tension. The Club has just paid an enormous amount of money for a young Tasmanian player in a huge gamble that he will help change their fortunes. What they don't know is that he's become disenchanted with chasing a piece of pigskin around a muddy paddock. His arrival at the club ignites the tension and friction that has been gradually building between a number of key people.
John Wood will be joined by a brilliant cast consisting of Christopher Connelly, Guy Kable, Denis Moore, Christopher Parker and Simon Walker.
"HIT Productions revival under the crackerjack direction of Bruce Myles and with a stellar cast proves that Williamson's sharp, insightful and very funny jibe of tribal ritual and boardroom club politics is still scoring goals at premiership theatre." - The Canberra Times
"John Wood's slapstick timing and obvious love of the material and character make this a must see version of one of Australia's greatest plays". - The Sunday Mail

Ritual Events and GPO bring you electro-house master producer and Ministry of Sound touring DJ Mind Electric from Perth, sure to rock the place with his own brand of electro party house productions and bag of tricks!
Kristian Jackson is the brains and brawn behind Mind ELECTRIC and is signed to leading home-grown dance label Vicious (Dirty South, Vandalism, The Potbelleez, Madison Avenue), and overseas Labels Art&Craft (UK) and Attractive (Germany).
Discovered by the Vicious Label directors John Course (Electro Funk Lovers) and Andy Van (Vandalism, Madison Avenue) Jackson moved back to Western Australia from three years DJing throughout Europe, where his ability to move a dance floor saw him rock clubs in Sweden and Germany; including Hamburg’s infamous Reeperbahn Red-light District.
Mixing it with the best Jackson has played alongside an impressive list of international performers from D. Ramirez, Carl Cox, Junior Jack & Kid Creme, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Benny Benassi, to locals Dirty South, TV Rock, Grant Smillie, John Course, Sam la More, Hook and Sling, The Potbelleez, Mark Dynamix and Kid Kenobi.
Recently returning from touring China Kristian was awarded #1 Best Electro Producer, #2 Best Electro DJ, and #2 Best 4/4 Producer at Perth’s Dance Music Awards. Continuing to grow as one of Australia’s most in demand Producer DJ’s Mind Electric frequently headlines Australian club brands such as Frisk, Vegasmode, Onelove and Vicious Sound System. No stranger to the big stage Mind Electric has also joined the legendary Ministry of Sound tours including “The Annual”, “Clubbers Guide” and “Sessions”. Jackson made his first appearance at Good Vibrations Festival in February 2008 shortly before being appointed the Ambassador for Pioneer Pro DJ Gear in Western Australia!
Recent months Kristian has been very busy locked away in his studio producing some new beats and 3rd single “Gotta Keep On”, which has already featured on Vicious Cuts 3, The 2008 Pacha Australia CD and the highly regarded Club Azuli CD compilations. “Don’t Change”, the forth installment by Mind Electric is a big room vocal banger featuring the amazing vocals from fellow Vicious Artist “Isaac James”. This latest release is currently getting smashed by John Course, Vandalism, and many A-list DJs.
Another bomb from Mind Electric is entitled “Infinity” which is a tribute to the classic anthem produced by Guru Josh in 1990. His version, featuring that unforgettable sax hook and new killer Piano riff, has copped an absolute hammering the last few months by the likes of Carl Kennedy, John Course, Vandalism and TV Rock.
Jackson has also been busy remixing for Superstars “Kaskade”, “The Potbelleez
