78 Saab are a beautiful rock and roll band like no other. Singer - Ben Nash’s distinctively husky, yet lustrous vocals accompany psychedelic guitars and cruise effortlessly with the rhythm section across a soundscape of emotive and endearing songs that range from gently textured trippier moments to unrestrained rock.
The group got their start in inner city Sydney’s well known live music venues like The Sandringham, The Landsdowne and The Hopetoun Hotel.
Made up of Ben Nash (vocals/guitar), Jake Andrews (guitar), Garth Tregillgas (bass) and Nicholai Danko (Drums), the band have been described as a cross between REM, Neil Young and The Rolling Stones as well as our own Died Pretty and The Church.
Early on, Saab began an association with Winterman & Goldstein/Ivy League, whose other acts include the likes of The Vines, Jet, Rocket Science Youth Group and Neon. They released 2 EPs, “Eastwards by Removal” and “Hello Believers”, before recording their debut album, “Picture a Hum, Can’t Hear A Sound” on a meagre budget with producer Greg Wales. It included the brilliant single “Sunshine” and by the end of the campaign, 78 Saab had become a mainstay at alternative radio in Australia, having amassed a total of 6 high rotation singles on Triple J.
With ‘Crossed Lines’, the band’s forthcoming second album, 78 Saab have gone a step further and delivered one of the finest Australian releases of the year. Working with producer Tim Whitten (Powderfinger, Hoodoo Gurus, Art of Fighting), the album embodies the band’s musical history far beyond the independent formings of their youth and reveals a maturity and competence equal to that of their US and UK contemporaries.
From start to finish this album has real depth. The songs are melancholic yet romantic, introspective yet defiant. Stand outs include ‘No Illusions’, ‘Beat of Your Drum’, ‘Cops’ and the first radio single – ‘Come On’.
Already added to high rotation at Triple J ‘Come On’ was one of the biggest songs added at Alternate radio this month, with the likes of Triple M also starting to pick up the track. This set the ground for their official first single (EP) ‘Beat of Your Drum’ which was serviced to radio in the first week of August and released to retail on August 30.
Crossed Lines and Beat Of Your Drum are in stores now on Ivy League Records.
